> Answer: Primarily it is for one's own joy, but collaterally it also benefits others. If someone wearies of texts and dislikes words, then to please such a person, there is noble silence. As in the \*Vinaya\*: to generate merit for others, when receiving offerings, the noble one remains silent. As with the elder monk Pārśva, who refuted Aśvaghoṣa, and therefore remained silent. As when the Buddha sat cross-legged in proper mindfulness, with body and mind unmoving, causing immeasurable people to awaken to the traces of the Way. Therefore remaining silent is in all cases the four siddhāntas giving rise to this silence to benefit all beings. How could it be said to lack benefit?
