> It is only from the perspective of the gradual that the five flavors can be clarified. Furthermore, if the lesser does not hear the great, the great is entirely sudden; if the great does not employ the lesser, the lesser is entirely gradual; if the great is used to shatter the lesser, this is the gradual and the sudden set forth side by side; if the lesser is carried along to clarify the great, this is the gradual and the sudden mutually supporting; if the lesser is converged into the great, this is the complete merging of the gradual and the sudden. Therefore the Anantanirdeśa-sūtra states: "In the two dharmas of the gradual and the sudden, the three paths and four fruits did not unite." At the present time they unite, which is precisely this meaning.
