The Avataṃsaka-sūtra, for converting bodhisattvas, is like the sun illuminating the high mountains, and is called the sudden teaching. The Tripiṭaka, for converting the small vehicle, first teaches the half-letters, and is therefore called the teaching with characteristics. After twelve years, for people of the Mahāyāna, he taught the Prajñā of the five periods up to the eternal abiding, which is called the teaching without characteristics. All these are gradual teachings. There are other sūtras, not subsumed under the sudden or gradual, that clarify the eternal abiding of buddha-nature, such as the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra and Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra; these are called particular indeterminate teachings.
