> Ninth, dhyāna masters of the northern region clarified two kinds of Mahāyāna teachings: first, the Mahāyāna with characteristics; second, the Mahāyāna without characteristics. The one with characteristics refers to sūtras such as the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, Ratnakāraṇḍa-sūtra, and Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, which explain the stages and characteristics of practices and merits of the ten grounds. The one without characteristics refers to sūtras such as the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra and Viśeṣacintibrahmaparipṛcchā-sūtra, where the true dharma is devoid of sequential explanation, and all sentient beings are identical to the characteristic of nirvāṇa.
