> 'After a short while, the father knew that his son's mind had gradually become open and at ease. When he was on the verge of death, he summoned his son and assembled his relatives, and openly declared: "This is truly my son, and I am truly his father. Everything I now possess belongs to my son." He bequeathed the family estate to him, and the impoverished son rejoiced, having attained what he had never had before.' What meaning does this express? That is: after \*Prajñā\*, the \*Lotus Sūtra\* was expounded next. Previously he had already taken charge of and known the various goods in the storehouses; afterwards there was no need to speak of them, but only to bequeath the estate. It is like previously turning and transmitting the teaching, where they all came to know the Dharma gates; there was no need to expound the contemplative practices again, but simply destroy the thatched hut, bestow a single great carriage, and confer the vyākaraṇa of buddhahood. Is this not clearly seeing the Buddha-nature and abiding in the Great Nirvāṇa? Therefore it is said that from \*Mahā-prajñā\* emerges the \*Mahā-nirvāṇa\*. At that time ignorance was shattered, the principle of the Middle Way was revealed, and his mind was pure and bright like clear ghee—just as from cooked butter one turns to produce ghee. This is the teaching of the fifth period.
