> These teachings of the five flavors seasoned and ripened one segment of beings of gradual spiritual capacity, such that venerable śrāvakas like Śāriputra received vyākaraṇa in the \*Lotus Sūtra\*, saw the Tathāgata-nature, and accomplished the great fruit. It is like the autumn harvest and winter storage, having nothing further to do; non-arising and non-arising is called the Great Nirvāṇa—this was the earlier group. From the \*Mahā-prajñā\* emerged the \*Lotus Sūtra of the Wonderful Dharma\*; for those who were not yet ripened, \*Prajñā\* was discussed again, and they entered into \*Nirvāṇa\* and saw the Buddha-nature—this was the later group, where again from \*Prajñā\* emerged the \*Mahā-nirvāṇa\*.
