> Next, in clarifying the ten dharmas of the bodhisattva and buddha realms, here there is a further fine distinction of three kinds of bodhisattvas (and so on). For the bodhisattvas of the six perfections, mark, nature, substance, and force are discussed in terms of merit; wholesome karma is the cause; defilement is the condition; and the severance of fetters in thirty-four mental states is the effect. A buddha then has no retribution, while the bodhisattva is complete with all ten. For the bodhisattvas of the shared teaching, mark and nature are discussed in terms of the uncontaminated. Before the sixth stage, residual mental clinging receives retribution; at the sixth stage, mental clinging is exhausted and they do not receive a subsequent existence, taking vows to sustain habitual rebirth, which is not true karmic retribution, and so they have only nine and not ten. For the bodhisattvas of the distinctive teaching, the ten dharmas are discussed in terms of practicing the sequential contemplation of the Middle Way. Although this person has severed general afflictions, they know of their own accord that there is rebirth, and thus are complete with the ten dharmas (and so on).
