> Next, clarifying the realization of the second fruit, there are two types: first, the candidate; second, the fruit. The candidate: after the mind of the first fruit, one further cultivates the contemplation of the sixteen truths, and the practices of the seven factors of awakening become manifest; that is, in this world, being outflow-free, one severs afflictions. With one grade unimpeded, one severs one grade of the desire realm's afflictions, up to severing five grades; all these are candidates, also called srotāpanna of superior advancement. Based on this, the 'family-to-family' is discussed. As for the second fruit: if one exhausts and severs six grades, realizing liberation from the sixth grade of the desire realm, this is the fruit of sakṛdāgāmin. In India it is called 'thin,' meaning thinning out the afflictions of the desire realm.
