> When cultivating this wisdom, one immediately attains abiding in the ground of fearlessness, which is the first ground of joy. One is free from the five fears: the fear of livelihood, fear of bad reputation, fear of death, fear of wretched realms, and fear of the awe-inspiring virtue of assemblies. The \*Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra\* states: 'Not fearing greed, anger, and delusion.' Since internally there are no three poisons and externally one is detached from the eight winds, there is no fear of bad reputation; when it says 'not fearing hells' and so forth, there is no fear of wretched realms; when it says 'not fearing śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas', there is no fear of assemblies; seeing the Middle Way, there is no fear of the two kinds of death; and the wisdom of the real mark establishing eternal life, there is no fear of livelihood.
