> The realm of existence in hell is destroyed by using the stainless samādhi. Hell is a place of retribution for heavy stains; the cause of this retribution is stains—namely, the stain of evil karma, the stain of views and thoughts, the stain of sands of dust, and the stain of ignorance (the first aspect). The bodhisattva first sees this fault and, to destroy all stains, cultivates the fundamental precepts explained earlier to destroy the stain of evil karma; cultivates the concentrations such as the eight liberations explained earlier to subdue the stain of views and thoughts; cultivates the wisdom of arising and non-arising explained earlier to destroy the stain of views and thoughts; cultivates the immeasurable wisdom explained earlier to destroy the stain of sands of dust; and cultivates the uncreated wisdom explained earlier to destroy the stain of ignorance (the second aspect). Because the stain of views and thoughts is destroyed, the samādhi of the real truth is consummated; because the stains of evil karma and sands of dust are destroyed, the samādhi of the conventional truth is consummated; and because the stain of ignorance is destroyed, the king samādhi of the middle way is consummated (the third aspect). When bodhisattvas themselves destroy all the stains of hell, in every phrase they have compassionate vows that subtly perfume the dharma realm. If in that realm of existence in hell there are spiritual capacities and conditions that engage their loving-kindness and compassion, by the power of the king samādhi they are able to respond without stirring from the dharma-nature. Just as with Vasu or Devadatta, they manifest the appropriate body and preach the appropriate Dharma. If in that hell there is a capacity for goodness, through the loving-kindness and compassion within holding the precepts they respond to them, leading them to leave suffering and attain bliss; if there is a capacity to enter emptiness, through the loving-kindness and compassion of the wisdom of arising and non-arising they respond to them, leading them to attain the real truth; if there is a capacity to enter the provisional, through the loving-kindness and compassion of immeasurable wisdom they respond to them, leading them to attain the conventional truth; and if there is a capacity to enter the middle, through the loving-kindness and compassion of uncreated wisdom they respond to them, leading them to attain the king samādhi. Having first made oneself stainless, one now causes others to be stainless; therefore this samādhi is called 'stainless' (the remaining cases follow this pattern and will not be recorded in full detail).
