> Next, clarifying what is subtle and what is not subtle. The Treatise says: 'The three siddhāntas are saṃvṛti-satya, the realm where the mind operates, which can be broken and destroyed. The paramārtha siddhānta is where the mind does not operate, the dharma attained by the mind of the buddhas and sages, which cannot be broken or destroyed; that is the true truth.' If that is so, then by comparison, the four siddhāntas are subsumed under the two truths. If there is further the Middle Way, how then is it subsumed? If it does not subsume the Middle, it is only the meaning of the Tripiṭaka and the Shared \[teachings\], and these siddhāntas are coarse. Now we say that conventional existence and true non-existence are separated, divergent dharmas; they are precisely the realm where the mind of the three siddhāntas operates, which can be broken and destroyed. The Middle Way paramārtha is neither existent nor non-existent; when existence and non-existence are non-dual, there is no separation or divergence, and the absence of divergence is the true truth. The path opened by the former three siddhāntas reaches only as far as the conjured city; the conjured city is not real, hence it can be broken and destroyed, and what can be destroyed is coarse. Now the Middle Way is without divergence and further leads all the way to the place of jewels; nothing can surpass it, and nothing can destroy it, hence it cannot be destroyed and is called subtle. If other sūtras expound the Middle Way paramārtha siddhānta, it does not differ from this sūtra. However, other sūtras carry along what is attained by the arhats as the paramārtha siddhānta, and therefore it is not called subtle. This sūtra directly discards expedients and possesses only the perfect, real four siddhāntas; therefore it is subtle. If one does not resolve the three siddhāntas into the paramārtha, that is again coarse; if one resolves every single siddhānta such that all possess the paramārtha, that is subtle.
