> If we speak of the Buddha's responding to capacities through arising, abolishing, refuting, and establishing, as the Immeasurable Meanings Sūtra states: "Immeasurable dharmas are born from a single dharma; namely, the two paths, the three dharmas, and the four fruits." The "two paths" are the sudden and the gradual. The "three dharmas" are the three vehicles. The "four fruits" are the four stages. These immeasurable dharmas are born from a single dharma. Why? Since the two paths are the sudden and the gradual, the sudden is the great path, the sun shining upon the high mountains; let us set it aside for now. Now, clarifying the beginning of the gradual path: this is the tripiṭaka teaching. The teaching says: to seek buddhahood, one must cultivate the six perfections for three asaṃkhyeya kalpas and plant the physical marks for a hundred kalpas, only then being able to attain buddhahood. Desiring to generate phenomenal good, he made this statement. For those who wish to seek buddhahood, reforming evil and pursuing good, once good is established the teaching is abolished. It is then refuted: How could there be a bodhisattva who does not sever afflictive entanglements and yet attains bodhi? A poisoned vessel is unfit for holding food. This teaching is then abolished, and both its practices and stages are abolished. Originally one practiced the cause looking toward the fruit; with no fruit to look toward, both the buddha-wisdom and the buddha-stage are abolished.
