Discussed in terms of principle, they are the same suchness; therefore they are not distinct. Discussed in terms of phenomena, there are spiritual capacity and response; therefore they are not identical. For example, father and son are naturally related, possessing a shared bodily constitution; that they should be distinct is unacceptable. Yet if they were identical, the father would be the son and the son would be the father; identity is also unacceptable. It is simply in terms of being neither identical nor distinct that father and son are discussed. Sentient beings in the nature of principle are not different from the Buddha; therefore they are not distinct. Yet sentient beings are concealed while the Tathāgata is manifest; therefore they are not identical. It is in being neither identical nor distinct that spiritual capacity and response are discussed. Furthermore, being identical in that both are neither phenomena nor principle, they are not distinct; sentient beings attain phenomena while the sage attains principle; and the sage attains phenomena while ordinary beings possess principle.
