> Third, explaining the wonderfulness of the original land: The sūtra states: 'Ever since then, I have constantly been in this sahā world preaching the Dharma and teaching, and also leading and benefiting sentient beings in other places.' 'Sahā' is the land of common residence of the original time. 'Other places' refers to the other three lands of the original time. This points to the land inhabited by the true and response \[bodies\] at the original time, not the lands within the traces. The explanation of lands within the traces also takes more than one approach: Some say that governing this realm of three thousand \[worlds\] with its hundred kotis of suns and moons is the defiled land of common residence. Some say that to the west there is a land named Invincible, whose adornments are just like those of Sukhāvatī; this is the pure land of common residence. Some say that the Flower King World, the ocean of the Lotus Treasury, is the land of true reward. Some say that the dwelling place of that Buddha is called Permanent Quiescent Light, which is the ultimate land. The principle of Quiescent Light is all-pervading, like a mirror or a vessel; the distinct lands differ, like images or boiled rice; separated by the force of karma, what is perceived through stimulus varies. The Vimalakīrti Sūtra states: 'My buddha land is pure, yet you do not see it.' This is a difference in the perception of sentient beings due to their capacities; it does not pertain to the buddha land. If one says, 'Now this triple world is entirely mine,' then the pacification and embrace of the pure and defiled in the various lands are all the Buddha's doing. For example, when commoners dwell on land, the land is not theirs; or like a father building a house, when the father departs, the house remains. The Tathāgata is also like this: for the sake of sentient beings he takes a buddha land, and when his teaching is completed and he enters nirvāṇa, the Buddha departs and the land remains; this pertains to the buddha land, not to sentient beings. Furthermore, the three transformations of the lands are either transforming the defilement of common residence to let them see the purity of common residence; or letting them see the purity of expedient means with remainder—for example, as the 'Lifespan' chapter says: 'If there are those with deep faith and understanding, they see the Buddha constantly on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa together with the great bodhisattvas and assembly of monks'—or letting them see the purity of true reward, for example, seeing the sahā land entirely made of lapis lazuli and filled purely with bodhisattvas, which is its meaning; or letting them see Quiescent Light, and so forth. It is simply the power of the Lotus Samādhi that causes them to see differently.
