> The five hundred arhats composed the Vibhāṣā precisely to explain attaining the path through the gate of existence; why would one say it is merely an expedient for harmonizing the mind? When the four gates are harmonized, all can lead to attaining the path. If grasping and attachment arise, none can lead to attaining the path. If one only says that seeing existence attains the path and seeing emptiness does not attain the path, how does this differ from outsiders? Therefore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'If one does not attain the expedients of prajñā, one falls into existence or non-existence.' Now, using the ten dharmas as expedients, one directly enters the gate of truth, eternally differing from non-Buddhists. This is the contemplation of entering truth through the gate of existence. The expedients from beginning to end for the contemplations of entering truth through the other gates—the gate of emptiness, the gate of both emptiness and existence, and the gate of neither emptiness nor existence—differ respectively from the gate of existence. Yet they all converge in partial truth and sever the defilements of the three realms, without any difference. The other three gates correspond to existence, uniformly entailing ten contemplations, largely the same with minor differences, which can be understood in thought, so I will not trouble to record them here (and so forth).
