Translated as "thread" (\*xiàn\*): the thread strings together and maintains teaching, practice, and principle so that they do not scatter; the meanings of adorning the body and so forth are as explained previously. Furthermore, thread can sew: sewing the teaching causes chapters and phrases to be sequentially ordered so that one is able to preach the Dharma. Just as a pratyekabuddha, not encountering the thread of the twelve divisions, cannot preach the Dharma, and worldly intellect, debate, and cleverness also do not attain the thread of the sūtra, failing to form right speech. Furthermore, the thread can sew practice: relying on the sūtra, practice is correct; contravening the sūtra, practice is deviant.
