> Second, identical to dharmas and not identical to dharmas: If one speaks of existence as a gate, this existence is not the existence of birth and death; going beyond birth and death, one separately discusses true, wholesome, wondrous existence. As for the gate of emptiness, going beyond the truth of the two vehicles, one separately discusses ultimate emptiness; up to the gate of neither existence nor non-existence, it is also like this. These are the characteristics of the four distinctive gates. If existence is taken as a gate, the very existence of birth and death is the existence of the real mark; all dharmas converge in existence, existence is itself the dharma realm, and beyond the dharma realm there is no other dharma to discuss; birth and death is itself nirvāṇa, nirvāṇa is itself birth and death, without duality or difference, merely raising existence as the starting point of the gate; it truly possesses all dharmas, perfectly penetrating without obstruction—this is called the gate of existence. The other three gates are also like this; these very dharmas of birth and death are the characteristics of the four perfect gates. Furthermore, 'identical to dharmas' has pervasive and non-pervasive aspects, distinguishing the perfect and distinctive characteristics, differentiated by analogy with the preceding (and so forth), in terms of whether the five entrenchments are pervasive or non-pervasive. Furthermore, whether being identical to dharmas or not identical to dharmas occurs earlier or later distinguishes the distinctive and perfect characteristics, as differentiated before (and so forth).
