- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [9.49](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1716.9.49)

> This meaning should be applied generally; it must not be confined to a single gate. Why is this? As for the four gates of the Tripiṭaka, they are spoken differently to respond to capacities, hence called 'four'; they are equally the Buddha's teaching, hence called 'one'. Gate by gate, their skillful means differ, hence called 'four'; they equally head toward nirvāṇa, hence called 'one'. The facilitated follows the facilitating, hence called 'four'; the facilitating unites with the facilitated, hence called 'one'. That there is no bodhi within words discusses narrowness and smallness in terms of teaching; just as a narrow path cannot admit two people walking side by side, this discusses narrowness and smallness in terms of practice. That teaching and practice, as two gates, find it difficult to accord with the true discusses narrowness and smallness in terms of principle (and so on).
