《中論》為時人見成病，先以大蕩，後示入真之門。今經無復見病，但住草庵，須開方便門，示圓實相，故先列小門，次明大門。開破適時，各有其美。

> The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā was for the contemporary people whose \[wrong\] views had formed an illness; it first sweeps them away with the great, and later shows the gate of entering the true. In the present sūtra there is no longer any illness of views; but dwelling in the thatched hut, it is necessary to open the expedient gates and display the perfect, real mark. Therefore it first lists the lesser gates and next clarifies the greater gates. Opening and breaking each suit their time, and each has its own excellence.
