> Regarding the teachings after the Lotus Sūtra, there is no need to open them further; as for the teachings prior to the Lotus Sūtra, if their gates and principle had already entered the subtle, what further need is there to open them? Or the gate and principle may be subtle, yet the person is not yet subtle. Where the gate and principle are subtle, there is also no need to open them; but if the gate, the principle, or the person is not yet subtle, they must now be opened. This means opening all craving, views, and afflictions to be identical to bodhi; hence it says: 'Contemplating all dharmas as empty, like the real mark.' It opens all birth-and-death to be identical to nirvāṇa; hence it says: 'The worldly characteristics are permanently abiding.' It opens all ordinary people to be subtle persons; hence it says: 'All sentient beings are my children.' It opens all teachings of craving and views to be identical to the Buddhadharma; hence it says: 'If they explain secular classics, or the management of livelihood and production, none are contrary to the real mark.' It opens all sentient beings to be identical to the subtle principle; hence it says: 'In order to cause sentient beings to open the Buddha's knowledge and vision; displaying, awakening to, and entering are also like this.' It opens all Hīnayāna dharmas to be identical to subtle dharmas; hence it says: 'Fully understanding the śrāvaka dharmas, this is the king of sūtras.' It opens all śrāvaka teachings; hence it says: 'Formerly, in front of the bodhisattvas, the Buddha disparaged the śrāvakas, yet the Buddha truly transformed them with the Mahāyāna.' It opens all śrāvaka practices to be subtle practices; hence it says: 'What you are practicing is the bodhisattva path.' It opens all śrāvaka principles to be the subtle principle; hence it says: 'Opening the expedient gates and showing the true mark.' It opens all bodhisattvas who had not yet been touched by the subtle, so that now all attain perfection; hence it says: 'When the bodhisattvas hear this Dharma, their net of doubts is completely removed.'
