> Next, within \[the section\] on the doctrinal classification, first there is the heading, and next the explanation. The explanation itself has four \[parts\]. First, within the Tripiṭaka \[Teaching\], there are two \[parts\]: first, clarifying the three tracks of the three vehicles; next, from "this teaching" onward, clarifying the purport of the teaching. Therein, it clarifies what is expressed, the destination reached, and the arising and cessation \[of the teaching\]. That "the true cannot convey" is what is expressed; therefore they demand the carts. As for the statement that "the true cannot convey": the two vehicles of the Tripiṭaka and Shared \[Teachings\] realize the biased principle of truth, which is the ultimate principle of their respective teachings, and therefore it is not called conveying. Conveying means carrying, and also means going far. The Book of Changes states: "The sun and moon move in their courses (yun)," which refers to motion. The Shuowen \[jiezi\] states: "Carrying over land is called yun." Since the lesser fruit is already ultimate \[for them\], it does not have the meaning of conveying. As for "demanding the carts": the elder previously promised the children outside the gate of the burning house, saying, "Come out, and I will make these carts for you." Since they were not originally possessed, he says "make." After the children came out and did not see the carts of the fruit, they all went to their father's place and addressed the father, saying, "We pray you grant us the three kinds of precious carts." This is the meaning of demanding. Below, the text elaborates on the meaning of the three vehicles demanding \[the carts\] (and so on). That demanding is not mentioned in the Separate Teaching below is because, in terms of the subsequent path of realization, it is still the real vehicle, and therefore there is no need to demand. If based on the path of instruction, all generally must demand; hence it says: "Even non-retrogressing bodhisattvas cannot know." Next, within the Shared Teaching there are also two \[parts\]: first, clarifying that among the three tracks the differences between the three vehicles are not differentiated, because their major aspects are identical and minor aspects differ, so there is no need to differentiate them. From "this teaching" onward, it clarifies the purport of the teaching; fully as in the Tripiṭaka \[Teaching\], consult it there.
