> The fourth major section explains functional capacity, in which there are two parts: first, explaining the name; second, from "Although principle" onward, directly explaining \[it\]. In the explanation there are two parts: first, the functional capacity of ordinary stages; second, the functional capacity of noble stages. In the first text there are again two parts: first, briefly explaining the outer ordinary and inner ordinary stages; second, from "Nirvāṇa" onward, relying on this to explain comprehensively the stages of the four refuges. As for the stages of the four refuges: because these four persons are all able to transform others, these stages are used to explain the functional capacity of persons on the causal level; if discussed according to the present text, it should span cause and effect. The meaning of the four refuges is fully and exhaustively explained as in the sixth \[fascicle\] of the Great Sūtra. Within this there are four parts: first, briefly recounting the sūtra's intent; second, from "The masters" onward, clarifying the failure of the old classifications to grasp the purport; third, from "Before the bhūmis" onward, provisionally following the ancients to set forth the classification of stages in the Separate \[Teaching\]; fourth, from "If we deduce the Perfect" onward, our school sets up the stages of the Perfect \[Teaching\] based on the Separate \[Teaching\] and spanning beginning to end.
