> Third, clarifying the Indeterminate has two parts: first, a brief indication; next, citing sūtras to explain. Within the explanation there are three: first, citing the teaching; next, explaining the sūtra; third, concluding the explanation of the sūtra's meaning. Within the middle there are also two: first, clarifying the cause of the indeterminate, caused by having heard the Dharma in the past; next, clarifying the indeterminate proper, which is the manifestation of habit in the present life. Taking Trapuṣa as the beginning: Trapuṣa still belonged to the explicit and had not yet made use of the secret, so only upon reaching the Deer Park were the explicit and secret distinguished. Next, when only "bodhisattvas" are spoken of in the curd and clarified butter, this is also explicit. It should also be said that, if it is the secret teaching, persons of the two vehicles attain entry everywhere, but the text is merely brief. Not mentioning the present sūtra is as differentiated in the first fascicle: because the present sūtra has no indeterminate. As for "the dull-rooted of the two vehicles," etc., spoken of in the Nirvāṇa \[Sūtra\]: they should all have attained awakening and entry in the Lotus Sūtra; if they arrive at Nirvāṇa, they are the dullest among the dull, and this, like the five thousand, again constitutes the indeterminate. As for "bodhisattvas": these are the bodhisattvas of the Tripiṭaka and Shared \[teachings\]; only upon reaching Nirvāṇa do they get to hear permanence and shatter fundamental ignorance; this also belongs to the indeterminate, because all of these are named the indeterminate arising. As for "the seven kinds of skillful means all enter the ultimate": our present explanation of the indeterminate is that not only is it named indeterminate because the seven kinds of skillful means all attain entry into the real within Nirvāṇa, but this is also the case in the preceding teachings. If one attains entry into the real within the Perfect Teaching or upon ascending the bhūmis in the Separate \[Teaching\], this is not named indeterminate; therefore, the designation indeterminate must reside in skillful means. Furthermore, ascending the bhūmis and ascending the abodes to leap over and sever ignorance is also named indeterminate; therefore it is said that "ghee kills people."
