> In this there are three parts: first, the purpose of its introduction; second, listing the sūtras; third, from "Desire and wish" onward, the direct confirmation through explanation. The first and second are as in the text. In the direct confirmation through explanation, the first two have different names but the same meaning and must be harmonized; the latter two have both names and meanings identical and are not harmonized. The first two form two parts. First, the worldly has three: first, clarifying that their names are different, which is the difference in names; second, citing proof; third, from "The Buddha's sūtras" onward, directly clarifying their mutual confirmation. The first is as in the text. Regarding the two citations of proof, although the texts resemble causes, their intent combines cause and effect. Good and evil are effects, while desire is the cause. Effects take causes as their root; the Buddha path is the effect. The original text of the Vimalakīrti says, "Walking in non-paths"; now the term "desire" is taken to pervade both shallow and profound. The essence of the path is free of desire, yet desire can serve as a cause. In the third, the confirmation through explanation, the cause necessarily attains the effect, so the cause is taken to confirm the effect.
