> How is it non-arising? When contemplating the eye and form, one does not plant the seed of suffering, does not produce the sprout of suffering, does not leak foul fluid, and does not gather maggots and flies. If the seed does not arise, then the sprout does not arise, the foul fluid does not arise, and maggots and flies do not arise; hence it is called non-arising. What is the seed of suffering? When the eye sees form, giving rise to thoughts of greed and anger is the seed of suffering. Thinking upon the dharmas of the five desires produces the sprout of suffering. The six sense faculties grasping the six sensory dusts is called the outflow of foul fluid. Good and evil competing to arise within the six sensory dusts are called maggots and flies. If one knows that the eye and form are impermanent, suffering, empty, and non-self, then greed and anger do not arise, thoughts of desire do not arise, grasping objects does not arise, and good and evil deeds do not arise; this is non-arising. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are also like this; the eye element up to the dharma element are also like this. Because Ājñāta was the very first to attain this wisdom of non-arising of the Tripiṭaka \[teaching\], he is named Ājñāta Kauṇḍinya.
