> The three Kāśyapas: Kāśyapa is explained as before. "Uruvilvā", also Uruvilvā or Uruvē, translates here as "Papaya Grove". "Nadī" translates here as "River", or "Stream". "Gayā", also Gayī or Elephant, translates here as "City Household". Located seven yojanas south of Rājagṛha, at the time of Vipaśyin Buddha they jointly erected a stūpa pillar, by reason of which they became brothers. The eldest brother was the master of King Bimbisāra, with five hundred disciples; the two younger brothers each had two hundred and fifty, following their elder brother's teachings. The Buddha performed ten kinds of transformations: the dragon's poison could not harm him, the dragon's fire could not burn him, the waters of the Ganges could not drown him, he gathered fruit from the three directions, he gathered non-glutinous grain from the north, \[he took\] the nectar of the Trāyastriṃśa heaven, knowing displeasure he vanished, knowing thoughts he manifested and came, fire was extinguished and would not burn, an axe when raised would not strike down, and he produced auspicious omens extensively. Although observing the many transformations, their errant attachments did not change, so they said: "Although Gautama has spiritual powers, he is not as true as our path." The Buddha then told him: "You are not an arhat, nor have you attained the Way." Suddenly he opened to awakening, and master and disciples all submitted; the two younger brothers, seeing the signs, also followed and took refuge in the Buddha, thus making one thousand monks.
