> The Vinaya says: "He was adept at transforming beings and giving the precepts, causing butchers to take the nighttime precepts and prostitutes to take the daytime precepts, so that later, when receiving their retributions, each experienced joyful appearances during the day or night respectively," and so forth. Furthermore, the Brahmin Śikhi (Shidian) said to five hundred Śākyas, "Can you debate with me?" The five hundred Śākyas said, "There is the Śākya Gopikā, who is unlearned and foolish, of clumsy and ugly speech; and there is Cūḍapanthaka, who among the renunciants is also of the lowest sort. If you can defeat these two men in debate, we will grant you the reputation of capability." Śikhi thought, "Defeating these two is nothing to be admired, but if perchance I am not their equal, it will be an utter humiliation." Later on the road he met Panthaka and asked, "What is your name?" \[Panthaka\] replied, "You should ask about meaning; why bother asking for a name?" He asked again, "Can you debate meaning with me?" He replied, "I can debate with King Brahmā, let alone someone blind and without eyes like you!" \[Śikhi\] asked again, "'Blind' means without eyes, and 'without eyes' means blind—is that not redundant?" Cūḍa performed the eighteen transformations. \[Śikhi\] said, "This man can only fly and transform; he understands nothing of meaning." Kātyāyana, hearing this from afar with his divine ear, concealed Panthaka, manifested a body like his, descended from the sky, and asked, "What is your name?" \[Śikhi\] replied, "My name is Male Hero." \[Kātyāyana\] asked, "'Male' means hero, and 'hero' means male—is that not redundant?" Śikhi replied, "Stop! Stop! Set aside this idle chatter; we may debate profound meaning." \[Śikhi\] asked, "Can one attain nirvāṇa without relying on dharmas?" \[Kātyāyana\] replied, "Without relying on the dharmas of the five aggregates, one can attain nirvāṇa." He asked again, "On what do the five aggregates arise in reliance?" He replied, "They arise due to craving." He asked again, "How is craving severed?" He replied, "Relying on the Eightfold Noble Path, craving can be severed." Hearing this, Śikhi became remote from dust and free from defilement. All instances are like this.
