> The text consists of four parts: first, questioning the merit of upholding the sūtra; second, answering that it is extremely great; third, requesting protection by means of spells; fourth, gaining benefit from hearing the chapter. The first, the question, is as in the text. The second, the answer, involves weighing and measuring. The original question was, "Is it much?" The answer is that it is extremely great, weighing out the merits, as in the text. Requesting to utter spells has five turns: first, Bhaiṣajyarāja; second, Pradānaśūra; third, Vaiśravaṇa; fourth, Dhṛtarāṣṭra; fifth, the ten rākṣasīs. Bhaiṣajyarāja has four parts: first, requesting; second, uttering; third, praising; fourth, endorsing. Below, there are three analogous parts, as in the text. The ten rākṣasīs have five parts: first, listing their names; second, requesting to utter; third, praising; fourth, vowing; fifth, endorsing. "Yakṣa" translates as swift ghost; "rākṣasa" translates as human-eating ghost; these two divisions are what is governed by the north. "Pūtana" are fever ghosts; "kṛtya" are corpse-raising ghosts; whether human or yakṣa, both have these ghosts. "Vetāla" are red-colored ghosts; "gandhāra" are yellow-colored ghosts (not yet clarified); "umāraka" are black-colored ghosts (not yet clarified); "apasmāra" are blue-colored ghosts. When the branch of an arjaka tree falls to the ground, by nature it breaks into seven pieces. Killing one's father, killing one's mother, and causing schism in the Sangha are three unpardonable offenses. Making oil in foreign countries involves pounding hemp seeds, letting worms breed in them, and pressing them together, seeking abundant liquid and greater richness; this fault is especially grave. Using measures and scales to give out light and take in heavy is the extreme of deceitful theft; in recent times there have been those who gave out with a small bushel and took in with a large bushel, with thunder branding their backs—this offense is also not light.
