> The gāthās comprise nineteen and a half lines. The first fifteen and a half lines merely praise the causes and effects of faith and disparagement; the final four lines praise the encouragement of upholding, which can be seen in the text and is not cited in detail. Regarding 'attachment to dharmas', this Dharma cannot be pointed out; if one determinately asserts that it exists, that is attachment to dharmas, and even if one determinately asserts that it is neither existent nor non-existent, that is also called attachment to dharmas. The Buddhabhūmi-sūtra says: 'A wheel of knives harming the people of Jambudvīpa is still of lesser fault; preaching the Mahāyāna with a mind of acquisition carries a transgression that surpasses that (and so forth).' The Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: 'Grasping existence contends with non-existence, and even grasping neither existence nor non-existence contends with existence and non-existence; like the cowhide and the dragon rope, neither escapes disaster.' The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā says: 'The buddhas preach the teaching of emptiness originally to convert those who cling to existence; if there are those who become attached to emptiness, the buddhas do not convert them.' If one determinately states that all dharmas are neither existent nor non-existent, this is called the discourse of ignorance. If one loses the meaning of the four siddhāntas, both one's own practice and converting others are called attachment to dharmas; if one attains the meaning of the four siddhāntas, both oneself and others are free from attachment.
