> The other stages are also like this; why only the first abode? Formerly it was said that 'the eighth bhūmi has all these virtues' without being doubted; now when praising the first abode perfectly, what virtue is not encompassed? If even the first abode is like this, how much more so the subsequent stages? The Saddharmapuṇḍarīkopadeśa says: 'The approaches of upper limb and lower limb, general characteristics and particular characteristics, should be known.' The initial clause, 'attaining non-retrogression,' is the general. This non-retrogression has ten kinds of manifestations: non-retrogression in hearing the Dharma is dhāraṇī; non-retrogression in joyful exposition is eloquence in joyful exposition; non-retrogression in preaching is turning the irreversible wheel of the Dharma; non-retrogression in relying on good spiritual friends is making offerings to hundreds of thousands of Buddhas and planting roots of myriad virtues; non-retrogression in severing doubts is being praised by the Buddhas; non-retrogression in entering affairs is cultivating their bodies with loving-kindness; non-retrogression in entering the true realm of all-knowledge is skillfully entering buddha wisdom; non-retrogression in relying on the emptiness of self and emptiness of phenomena is penetrating great wisdom; non-retrogression in entering the true realm is reaching the other shore; non-retrogression in what should be done having been done is delivering hundreds of thousands of sentient beings. Therefore the initial general clause is the upper limb, and the subsequent particular clauses are the lower limbs. In this record, praising the virtues of the first abode across is identical in meaning with this. The treatise says: 'Second, the approach of gathering affairs manifests in which pure bhūmis the bodhisattvas dwell, by what expedient means, in what realms, and through what things to be done that have been done.' If one follows this meaning, interpreting it as praising the bodhisattvas' virtues along is also unobjectionable.
