- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.55](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1718.3.55)

> Now, in explaining the expedient and the real, we first formulate four propositions: namely, that all dharmas are expedient, all dharmas are real, all dharmas are both expedient and real, and all dharmas are neither expedient nor real. That all dharmas are expedient: as the text says, 'The dharmas are like this in nature, characteristics, substance, power, origin, end, etc.'—even the slightest spoken word is entirely expedient. That all dharmas are real: as the text says, 'The Tathāgata skillfully preaches various dharmas, gladdening the minds of the multitude'—the minds of the multitude are gladdened by entering the real. Furthermore: 'All dharmas from the very beginning / are constantly marked by quiescent extinction.' It also says: 'Whatever the Tathāgata preaches all reaches the ground of all-knowledge.' It also says: 'All are real, not false.' Furthermore, in the great sūtra, the four propositions are all ineffable. That all dharmas are both expedient and real: as the text says, 'All dharmas as they really are in true reality'—this simultaneously clarifies that all are both expedient and real, just as the contemplation of impurity is both real and unreal, and so on.
