> Here one should clarify the meaning of the three Buddha-natures. The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'There is also a Buddha-nature that persons with roots of goodness have and icchantikas do not have'—this refers precisely to the minor goods of humans and gods. Lowering the head or raising a hand is the first basket of earth in making a mountain, the initial downy hair of a tree whose trunk takes arms to encircle. Formerly, when the expedient was not opened, it was said to abide in retributive fruition; now that expedient practices are opened, they are precisely the Buddha-nature as conditional cause, capable of advancing toward bodhi and completing the meaning of revealing the real.
