- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.54](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1718.4.54)

> The Śrīmālā\[devī-sūtra\] says: 'In their initial practice, \[followers of\] the three vehicles are not deluded about the dharma, and know of themselves that they will awaken.' The Upāsakaśīla-sūtra, fascicle fourteen, says: 'The two vehicles know of themselves that they will attain bodhi, yet temporarily take the fruit of the small vehicle.' Fascicle thirteen also says: 'Knowing it is easy, practicing it is difficult; although knowing the One Vehicle, they take arhatship.' Both of those sūtras say that they know; why does the present sūtra state that even after the three faculties they still did not know of themselves, first doubting and later awakening? What is the meaning of this?
