> This text is the fourth section of the parabolic explanation. The preceding three sections all explained it using similes; here the bestowal of prophecy also discusses prophecy by means of a simile. Why is there no fifth section? One explanation says: pointing above and pointing below, it is omitted and not discussed. Another says: the "Parable of the Plants" clarifies that all receive moisture and each attains growth, confirming that the fourfold assembly all obtain benefit; the compiler of the sūtra simply abbreviated it and did not set it forth. The text has two parts: first, directly bestowing prophecy on those of medium capacity; second, promising to explain previous lifetimes for those of lower capacity. The first again has two parts: first bestowing it on Kāśyapa, next bestowing it on the three persons; both have prose and verses. In the prose for Kāśyapa there are six items: first, practicing the cause; second, attaining the fruit; third, the names and adornments of the kalpa and land; fourth, the lifespan; fifth, the duration of the true and resemblance \[Dharma\] as in the text; sixth, the purity of the land. Among the three disciples there are again two parts: first, requesting prophecy; second, granting prophecy. In requesting prophecy there are seven verses: the first verse directly requests. The next two verses and a half open the simile. The next two verses and a half match the simile. The next one verse concludes the prophecies of the three persons, each having their practice of causes, attainment of fruit, kalpa, land, lifespan, and duration of the Dharma, all as in the text. From "All my disciples" onward, two verses and a half promise to further speak of previous lifetimes for those of lower capacity. These persons, having already heard the Dharma and similes and having also seen those of superior and medium capacities receive prophecy, are still hesitant and unclear, feeling deep shame; wishing to advance them in their path, \[the Buddha\] first promises a general prophecy and further explains their past conditions (and so forth).
