> Generally speaking in terms of phenomenal affairs, one must ascend the hall, straighten one's robes, and take one's seat before one can unfold and proclaim \[the teaching\]; therefore it is explained with reference to these three. Furthermore, speaking in terms of combining phenomenal affairs and principle: delusions do not exceed three kinds: first, giving rise to delusion in relation to painful retribution; second, giving rise to delusion in relation to binding karma; third, giving rise to delusion in relation to the principle of truths; therefore these three approaches are used to guide and instruct them. Furthermore, with reference to principle: being deluded about the real causes one to fall into suffering, hence the approach of loving-kindness and compassion is used; being deluded about the conventional causes one to sink into emptiness and indulge in bliss, hence the approach of harmonious forbearance is used; being deluded about the middle causes one to form cognitive obscurations, hence the approach of emptiness is used (and so on).
