> As from "the explanatory treatise" below up to "ghee": it lodges in the names of the five flavors to distinguish the bodhisattvas of the four teachings. The \*Śāstra\* also says: "Whatever is called wholesome dharma is all named \*sat\*; the substance and characteristics of wholesome dharmas are named \*tva\*." Therefore know that the bodhisattva's self-benefit and benefiting others are both wholesome dharmas and the substance and characteristics of the wholesome, which are the four kinds of paths of anuttarabodhi, praised by all worthies and sages; these are the \*sattvas\* of the four kinds of bodhi. Furthermore, the \*Śāstra\* says: "In general discussion, all three kinds are called bodhi, namely the three vehicles. Although the people of the prior two vehicles are called bodhi, it is not the merit of a buddha, hence they are not named sattva; they are merely mixed blood conditioned into the pure milk of the three asaṃkhyeyas and one hundred kalpas." Citing the three passages from the \*Pañcaviṃśati\* to verify the four flavors: for now it uses the principles of the three teachings to subsume the four flavors; how much more so since all five flavors here are judged as bodhisattvas! Thus it correlates curds with the shared, the two kinds of butter with the distinct, and ghee with the perfect. Because the various bodhisattvas pass through these four flavors and enter the indeterminate, they correspond in principle to the three contemplations: that is, when the Tripiṭaka bodhisattva transforms and enters the shared, it corresponds in principle to curds, and in terms of time this is entirely prior to the Vaipulya; when transforming and entering the distinct, it is in the two flavors, because in the two flavors there are both inconceivable matters of the bodhisattva. Citing \*Vimalakīrti\*: those who have already entered the real, in the two flavors, their minds match the principle of liberation; the eight thousand who felt inadequate manifested as being identical to those of dull faculties and the two vehicles, undergoing rebuke, washing, and purifying, and only then all entered the distinct. According to the intent of the \*Mystic Principle\*, one separates the two flavors to correlate with the shared and the distinct; advancing, retreating, expanding, and contracting both have two meanings. Therefore those who enter the real all erect their own bodies like the image on that throne—the throne being eighty-four thousand yojanas high, the body matches it. It borrows the intent in origin and traces to assist the correlation with the teachings. As for "the bodhisattvas' doubts are removed," and so forth: all verify that among the four bodhisattvas, the provisional ones must be opened; hence only when reaching the present sūtra are the doubts of the three bodhisattvas removed, only then being the path of practicing bodhisattvas with good conduct. As for "further, the Nirvāṇa," and so forth: since the two sūtras share the same flavor and all cease expectations, it therefore cites them as identical. As for the statement "briefly there are": this refers jointly to present and past.
