> Setting forth the three non-seekings, such as being the head of the Saṅgha, recounts past faults. The first fault: clinging to the seniority of the Small, the Great Dharma was completely missing; failing to abandon the Small was because of not yet recognizing the opening of the three; self-hardening meant that adherence to the Small had not shifted; protecting others meant being confused about the great track. The second fault: severing \[afflictions\] and realizing \[the fruit\] in a single lifetime, they therefore despised themselves for their advanced age; the ruined seeds were not yet dispelled, and the view of being unfit remained. The third fault: formerly confused about the essential purport, they vainly reckoned the efficacy of the correct position; because of this stubborn attitude, the great aspiration was difficult to arouse. From "high plateau" onward, it cites a parable to rebuke oneself: first the parable, then the application; because they already had attainment, they therefore did not seek. When the sūtra says "only contemplating" and so forth: one may also rely fully on the \*Kośa\*, bringing out the sixteen aspects as what was contemplated. For the sixteen aspects contrasted with the three voids, see the notes to the seventh fascicle of \*Great Calming and Contemplation\*. From "or pointing to" to "being the head of the Saṅgha and not seeking": because they occupied the position of the head of the Saṅgha, they had long listened at various seats of both the Small and Great \[teachings\]. Regarding "immeasurable precious treasures": formerly, when receiving the teachings in the Prajñā \[assemblies\], they thought they were for bodhisattvas; how could they have expected that now they would completely receive them bestowed equally? Regarding "and so forth" under "consulting and addressing": following worldly etiquette, when wishing to resolve something, one must first consult and address.
