### [9.103](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1719.9.103)

> From "concerning the initial offering of the three karmas" to "seen everywhere": this is the mutual response of stimulus and response. Making fifty kalpas seem like half a day clarifies the Tathāgata's inconceivable matter of extending and contracting \[time\], manifesting the Tathāgata's power of ease; thus it shows that for those without capacity, although time is lent or concealed, they cannot see the short in the long or the vast in the narrow. Does a mirror begrudge beauty? It is simply due to the form. Someone said: "Due to their aspiration to hear the Dharma, they forgot its length." Or it is said: "Length and shortness are both extinguished; length and shortness are both present." These both grasp the stimulus but lose the response; why constrain the Tathāgata's spiritual power? "Lent" (jie, reading zi-ye). Below "bowing and circumambulating," it further explains stimulus and response. First, it explains the offering of the three karmas as the capacity. Below "fifty kalpas," it explains the characteristics of stimulus and response: first, it explains the long being precisely the short; below "the four assemblies," it explains the narrow being precisely the vast. Under length and shortness, there are again four parts: first, a brief indication; next, below "the Tathāgata," clarifying that the non-long is long; third, below "the understanding," judging in terms of understanding and delusion, which is precisely answering the capacity; fourth, below "this is," clarifying the intention behind manifesting length and shortness. The first passage is one among the eight sovereignties. The second passage: viewed with the buddha eye, long and short are non-dual; viewed with the four eyes, there is not an absence of long and short; therefore he answers the capacities for long and short, causing them to see differently. The third passage: both understanding and delusion are capacities, therefore causing the bodhisattvas to see the long in the short, and the attached to see the short in the long. Just as with the myriad phenomena arrayed in dense variety, ordinary people consider them different, the two vehicles consider them identical, and the Tathāgata sees them as neither identical nor different, yet both identical and different. Since it says "causing the great assembly to think it was like half a day," it contracts that length and causes them to see shortness, hence it is called concealing length; the vast and narrow are also like this. Just as with the karmic retributions of outflows, a blind person sees nothing even in brightness, while a bat can see at night; thus we know brightness and darkness are in the eye, not merely in the objective realm; how much more so the power of present and past in the mutual calling of capacity and response!
