> "First expounding the Abhidharma for the Vajjiputtas": from this we know there was a separate Abhidharma piṭaka, which was spoken by the Buddha himself. Those who have not seen it dispute and speculate, with some saying it refers to the Upadeśa section among the twelve divisions of scriptures, but that is not so. The "Sūtra on the Continuation of Liberation": because it was spoken by the Buddha himself, it is provisionally called a sūtra. That which was compiled by Ānanda after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa is called sūtra. The "compilation of the five hundred": at first it was called liberation, and later, when the dharmalakṣaṇas were broadly compiled, it was then called a treatise. "Marks of desire": although the verses lack the words "marks of desire," because the prose has them they are now briefly explained. The \*Kośa\* says: "The six sensations of desire: embracing, holding hands, laughing, gazing, and sexual intercourse"; here we follow the traditional terminology. "Xulun" is simply asura. As the \*Madhyama Āgama\* states: "A certain heterodox wanderer asked Bakkula: 'You have been in the true Dharma for eighty years; have you ever engaged in sexual acts?' Bakkula said: 'Do not speak like that. There are other matters; why do you not ask about them?' The wanderer again asked: 'In eighty years have you ever given rise to thoughts of desire?' He replied: 'You should not ask such a question. In eighty years I have never once given rise to a thought of desire, nor have I ever given rise to a single thought of pride. I have never received robes from a householder, never cut robes, never asked another to make robes, never used a needle to sew robes, never accepted an invitation, never begged food from a wealthy family, never leaned against a wall, never looked at a woman's face, never entered a nun's room, never exchanged greetings with a nun, and down to on the road I have never spoken with them.'" He sat for eighty years; thus we know that he did not even have any thoughts of desire regarding clothing, food, and so forth, let alone thoughts of tainted desire! Propagators of the Dharma should view this as a mirror. Worldly people laugh at those who feign the Great Vehicle, considering them promiscuous and mixed; those who abide in Hinayāna restraints may also reflect carefully, let alone now when propagating the sūtra takes the cessation of ridicule as fundamental, and so forth.
