> Furthermore, wishing to clarify the Dharma gates of the three leadings, he preached this sūtra: first, from the Tathāgata's advent in the world up until before the Lotus Sūtra, he led the ninety-six kinds of wrong views and lay sentient beings to take refuge in the correct Dharma of the five vehicles; second, he led the differences of the five vehicles back together into the one vehicle, which is the meaning of the first part of the Lotus Sūtra; third, he led the causes of the one vehicle back to the fruit of the dharmakāya, which is the meaning of the latter part of this sūtra. These three leadings leave no teaching uncollected and no principle unencompassed. Now, fully clarifying the ultimate Dharma of the three leadings, he preached this sūtra.
