> Answer: The first two wisdoms give rise to faith; the next two wisdoms give rise to understanding; faith and understanding are self-cultivation; the third clarifies transforming others. One must be complete in these three; only then do people of the two vehicles become bodhisattvas. Furthermore, the first two wisdoms are faith; the next two wisdoms are understanding; the third two wisdoms are practice. All bodhisattvas must first have a mind of faith, next have understanding, and afterward have practice. We now explain this by mapping it onto the fifty-two stages: the first ten faiths, followed by the ten abodes—the ten abodes are precisely the ten understandings. Due to understanding, one gives rise to the ten practices; when practice and understanding are accomplished, one spontaneously proceeds toward the bodhisattva path, which may be called dedication. Once dedication conforms to the stream of non-arising, one ascends to the level, true awakening; therefore they are named the ten stages. If one matches the three kinds of dual wisdom to these stages: the first two wisdoms are faith, which are precisely the ten faiths; the next two wisdoms are understanding, which are precisely the ten abodes; the third two wisdoms are precisely the ten practices. Once understanding and practice are accomplished, one is then able to direct oneself toward the bodhisattva path; therefore there are the ten dedications. Once dedication conforms to the stream of non-arising, one ascends to the ten stages. Discussing the stages of the non-gradual, we make this determination; if it is the non-gradual of stages, a single thought-moment is complete in the three kinds of dual wisdom.
