The burning house parable can contain two meanings: first, broadly explaining the burning of the manifold sufferings of the burning house and thereby enticing the children out—this is spoken for ordinary people. If, after leaving the house, they ask for carriages and are granted carriages, and the granting of carriages is not false, and so on—this is spoken for śrāvakas who do not yet understand. Combined, speaking of the burning house causes them to leave the stage of ordinary people; rendering the three carriages vain and later equally bestowing the great carriage causes them to leave the stage of the two vehicles. One person can also possess both of these two meanings from beginning to end, and these two parables can also be spoken for two persons. The treatise merely puts forward one of them, and so takes it to be for the ordinary; what has traditionally come down also merely clarifies one of them, and so takes it to be for the noble.
