> Fifth, explaining whether there is demanding or no demanding. The Commentary on the Sūtra says: "Practicing emptiness and leaving behind existence, emptiness and existence are equally exhausted." If indeed outside the gate one sees only the single ultimate, then the various seekings naturally vanish; how could there be sentient grasping of demanding? Now, wishing to distinguish what was anticipated at the initial stage of the three vehicles and about to reveal what is converged upon in final accomplishment, it therefore hypothetically posits words given at the time, in order to manifest the meaning of equal bestowing. Evaluation: The Commentary explains according to the intent of the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra, hence there is no meaning of demanding. Its merit lies in that sūtra, but its fault lies in this teaching. Since this teaching clearly explains that there is demanding, one should not say it is hypothetically posited. Master Ji says: "There is no other demanding. It is merely that the great capacity knocks upon the Buddha, the meaning of which is identical to demanding. Why? Once the great capacity is aroused, looking back to the past there are no three vehicles; hence it says demanding the three." Evaluation: Master Ji's merit lies in seeking the one, but his fault lies in demanding the three. Why? In reality, there is capacity stirred to seek the one, and there is also demanding the three within sentient grasping. One-sidedly clinging to the single capacity misses the demanding from the sentient grasping of the three; therefore it is not to be adopted.
