> Answer: The general meaning is as explained by Master Dao-sheng and the Commentary on the Sūtra; now we must further grasp this meaning. If, upon hearing the Lotus Sūtra, one gives rise to the three wisdoms, then one is near to the Buddha path; if, although hearing it, one does not give rise to the three wisdoms, then one is far from the Buddha path. Thus the text says: 'If one is able to hear, understand, reflect, and cultivate, one is near to the Buddha path.' 'Hearing and understanding' refers to the wisdom of hearing; 'reflecting' refers to the wisdom of reflection; 'cultivating' refers to the wisdom of cultivation. Discussing near and far among the three wisdoms themselves, the wisdom of hearing is far and the remaining two are near; in this way it may be understood.
