- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [9.215](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1720.9.215)

> Next, to discuss the meaning of doctrinal gates regarding pure and defiled lands. There are four propositions in all: First, previously expounding the one and later expounding the three. This is like \[Vai\]rocana previously having expounded the one vehicle for bodhisattvas, and later concealing the origin of \[Vai\]rocana and manifesting the trace of Śākyamuni to expound the three vehicles, like the elder removing his fine robes and putting on ragged, dirty clothes. Second, previously expounding the three vehicles and later clarifying the one vehicle. This is Śākyamuni previously expounding the three and later clarifying the one; clarifying the one is precisely concealing the teaching of Śākyamuni and revealing the teaching of \[Vai\]rocana, resting the trace of Śākyamuni and revealing the origin of \[Vai\]rocana. These two propositions necessarily complement each other: the first clarifies manifesting the trace from the origin; the second clarifies revealing the origin from the trace. The first is removing the fine robes and putting on dirty, ragged clothes; the second is removing the dirty, ragged clothes and putting on the fine robes. Third, from beginning to end always expounding the one vehicle. As the Commentary \[Dazhidulun\] says: 'The world of seven jewels consists purely of bodhisattvas, who do not even hear the names of the two vehicles.' Fourth, only expounding the two vehicles and not expounding the Great Vehicle. As the Commentary says: 'The world of yellow gold consists purely of arhats; those in the land of white silver all seek to be pratyekabuddhas.'
