> Question: The Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: "By the power of the original vow, he manifests the exhaustion of dharmas; by the power of samādhi, he displays broken-body relics." The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā, commenting on this sūtra, says: "The Tathāgata broke his vajra body to produce powdered relics." These two sūtras clarify the existence of relics. The new Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra says: "Even if leeches were to grow white teeth in their mouths, relics of the Tathāgata's body could never be found. ... Even if a mouse were to climb a ladder of hare's horns, eat the moon, and eliminate the asuras, relics of the Tathāgata's body could never be found." This sūtra denies relics. Since existence and non-existence contradict each other, how is this to be understood?
