> Fifth, individually explaining the Introductory Chapter. 'Introductory' (xu) means gradual: relying on time and depending on place, shaking the earth and raining down flowers, it serves as the gradual transition to the main teaching, and is therefore called 'introductory'. Furthermore, 'introductory' means sequence: first explaining the causal origins and afterwards discerning the main scripture, it is simply the sequence of meaning. Furthermore, to say 'introductory' refers to an auspicious omen: things are listed at the head of the sūtra so that their auspicious omens may be observed. Furthermore, to say 'introductory' means to unfold (shu): desiring to unfold and broaden the things and principles, it is therefore called 'introductory'. 'Chapter' (pin): in foreign languages it is called varga; here it is translated as 'pin'. 'Pin' speaks of distinct division: because the twenty-eight sections explain different meanings, they are therefore called distinct. Second, it means category: because in explaining their meanings each has its own category.
