- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.233](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1721.1.233)

> Regarding "Pilindavatsa": translated here as "residual habit" and also called "harsh speech." When the Buddha was in the world, this person addressed all monks below the Buddha as "you fellow," and even scolded the river goddess of the Gaṅgā. The Buddha therefore admonished him: "From this day forward, do not utter the words 'you fellow.'" Addressing elders, he remembered the Buddha's words and thereupon changed it. For five hundred lifetimes he had been a Brahmin, and therefore had this habit of arrogance. Another explanation is that his clan was Pilinda and his personal name was Vatsa.
