> Below “the four heavenly kings”: the “Chapter on the Four Heavenly Kings” in the Shì jì \[Book of the World\] of the Dīrgha Āgama says: “One thousand yojanas east of Mount Sumeru is the heavenly king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, whose city is named Worthy and Superior, six thousand yojanas in length and breadth, adorned with seven tiers of varied jewels; one thousand yojanas south of Mount Sumeru is the heavenly king Virūḍhaka, whose city is named Good Sight; one thousand yojanas west of Mount Sumeru is the heavenly king Virūpākṣa, whose city is named Cūla-Good Sight; one thousand yojanas north of Mount Sumeru is the heavenly king Vaiśravaṇa, whose city has three names—first, Fearful; second, Revered by Devas; third, Refuge of the Multitudes—six thousand yojanas in length and breadth.” Furthermore, the Zhìdù lùn states: “The eastern heavenly king is named Dhṛtarāṣṭra, which translates as Lord Who Governs the Country, who leads the two classes of spirits, gandharvas and piśācas, and protects the people of Pūrvavideha from harm. The southern heavenly king is named Virūḍhaka, which translates as Lord of Growth, who leads kumbhāṇḍas and pretas, and protects the people of Jambudvīpa from harm. The western heavenly king is named Virūpākṣa, which translates here as Lord of Diverse Speech, who leads all nāgas and pūtanas, and protects the people of Godānīya from harm. The northern heavenly king is named Vaiśravaṇa, which translates here as Lord of Much Hearing, who leads yakṣas and all rākṣasas, and protects the people of Uttarakuru from harm. Therefore they are named the Four Heavenly Kings Who Protect the World.”
