> “Anavatapta” translates here as “Without Heat.” First, the name is taken from a lake. This lake is atop Mount Gandhamādana, north of Jambudvīpa, under the Tiānqí star; its water is cool and pure, hence it is called “Without Heat.” Inside the lake is a hall with five pillars, and the dragon resides within it. The Zhìdù lùn says that he is a bodhisattva of the seventh stage \[or seventh abode\]. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says that he has attained sovereignty in the Dharma-gate of sheltering with the great cloud and separating from suffering. Furthermore, regarding “without heat”: all dragons suffer from three kinds of pain. First, the wind blows hot sand onto their bodies, causing their flesh to rot and decay. Second, the wind blows away their jeweled crowns and clothing, exposing their dragon bodies and causing mental vexation. Third, when the dragons and their retinues are amusing themselves, garuḍas enter their palaces to seize their retinues, causing mental vexation. Sūtras also say that when dragons eat delicious fragrant food, it turns into toads; furthermore, their bodies have reverse scales, into which dirt and stones enter; furthermore, when engaged in desire, their dragon bodies are exposed like two entwined snakes. This dragon is free from all these pains.
